THE SOCIAL ECOLOGY OF DISABILITY
Description:
The Social Ecology of Disability is a collection of 20 articles classified into five critical themes in the area of disability. These are: Understanding Young children’s Needs, Issues in Education, Meeting Nutritional Needs, The Elderly, and Community & Disability. The papers are based on teaching, research and extension work at the Lady Irwin College, and are authored by its faculty and students. The subject of childhood and adult disability has received scant attention from the academia, both in instruction and research. The Lady Irwin College at the University of Delhi, makes a conscious effort to engage with issues in disability, since one of its aims is to enable students develop a positive attitude towards work with diverse and disadvantaged sections of people, and to empower them to take on social responsibility as they move out into the world. Being an institution of Home Science education, the college has the advantage of addressing disability issues, as well as persons affected with disabilities, from several perspectives, as Home Science is a multi-disciplinary subject. The Social Ecology of Disability is a third in the Technical Series brought out by the College. Technical Series volume 1 was titled ‘Indian Consumer: Behaviour, Education and Protection’ (2002), and volume 2 was ‘Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Communities’ (2006). It is hoped that students, researchers and academicians in the field of Home Science and other linked disciplines will find the present volume inspirational in undertaking further work in disability areas. The essays would be useful for all professionals who work in the domains of human development, disability studies, nutrition, childhood education, clothing designs, training of the disabled, and extension work.
